Random Musing

Life is full of mental pauses, vacations, or dazes if you will. I guess it just has to do with the separation of mind and body. Your mind may race while your body sleeps, so why not let your mind check out while your body does all the work? It’s only fair really. Of course, it doesn’t always happen at the most opportune times… class, work, church, bed… One could argue that its presence isn’t always needed in those moments, but merely kept on call.

A teacher of mine once said that you should outright admit it if you’ve accidentally taken a mental coffee break and missed something important. At the time we all felt empowered by his pushy, motivational way.

Yes, I can just admit that I’m to disinterested in what you have to say that I’ve elected to mentally inventory my laundry basket full of dirty clothes instead. Let’s see, should I do lights or darks next? Well, there is that one cute top I want to wear tomorrow, but I think I’m out of clean underwear… “Why are you mad at me? Oh, you ran your delivery truck into a building downtown?!” Crap! Why wasn’t I paying attention?! What was so important to drown him out? Oh yeah, underwear! Lights or darks. Maybe I should just buy some darker underwear so I can wash my undies and that cute top together. Crap! I’m not listening again! I’m such a bad girlfriend!

Would that teacher still promote full disclosure of my mental hop over to the greener side in this situation? Well, that relationship was going downhill anyway.

His name was S –. We first met when I was 15 going on 21. He was older, 22, and in college… five foot nine, shiny black hair to his shoulders, brown eyes, glasses to illustrate his collegiate status, half Japanese and the other half French. For some completely unknown reason I was smitten. Best guess was that his age, coupled with his mutual interest in me, was the recipe for how things ended up. We’ll call it meatloaf. In all my years I’ve never like meatloaf, but had to eat it anyway; it was just a part of growing up.
